Roosterfish feed close to shore, so you don't need a full day to reach them. The half day is built for inshore fishing.

Roosterfish hunt along rocky points, beaches and shallow reefs, often in a few meters of water. The classic way to catch them is slow-trolling live bait, usually small jacks or blue runners, close to the rocks. You can also cast poppers and other surface lures at fish that are chasing bait.
Moving water helps: a changing tide around the points pushes bait together and gets the roosters feeding.
Catch and release
Roosterfish aren't a billfish, but in Costa Rica they're treated as a catch-and-release fish. FECOP, the national sport fishing federation, asks anglers to release every one.
If you want fish to take home, the same inshore spots hold snapper, grouper and jacks, which you can keep within the legal limits.
